Calima I is a handcrafted unique ceramic sculpture created during an artist residency in Lanzarote, inspired by the island’s unique natural phenomenon known as calima—the atmospheric haze of volcanic ash, dust, and sand carried across the landscape by sweeping winds. Made from Lanzarote’s native red foraged clay, the piece embodies both the raw power and the ethereal beauty of the island.
This small sculptural vessel highlights the contrast between smooth flowing surfaces and rugged, textured areas, echoing the dual nature of Lanzarote—where soft hazy horizons meet the harsh edges of volcanic rock. Shaped using stretching, tearing, and kurinuki carving techniques, Calima I carries the energy of the land itself, translating atmospheric conditions into tactile form.
Each Calima piece is one-of-a-kind, carefully crafted through an extensive process of modeling, drying, bisque firing, and finishing, resulting in a durable, timeless ceramic work that embodies craftsmanship and the atmospheric soul of Lanzarote.
